Our story

In the late eighties of last century, painter Wang Hai came to Hong Kong from Chegndu with his wife, singer Wong SiuKing. The couple fit in the local cultural scene shortly and home cooking parties were on every weekend at Huang Yongyu’s home. The friends attended to the party with the signature dishes of their own. The dishes literally showcased the beauty of origin of the respective participants.

The home cooking style Sichuan dishes including braised beef brisket and ma po tofu from Mrs. Wang were very well received and were surprised at how delicious Sichuan food were. After dinner, Mrs. Wang would sing Chinese folk songs for entertainment. 

The weekly dinner gatherings then became twice a week… later on the couple were encouraged by the friends and opened Hong Kong’s first ever private kitchen “Da Ping Huo” – to be exact, an “artist restaurant” – both the design and the food served came from the artist couple.  It soon became a big hit and were highly acclaimed by the celebrities and political leaders in town. People all around the world made trips to savour the exquisite Sichuan flavours. After a couple of changes in location, eventually the private kitchen rested on the current address in Soho District.

To continue the perfectionism Mrs. Wang kept pursuing, Da Ping Huo insists cooking with fresh and quality ingredients to render the essence of signature dishes including braised beef brisket, mouthwatering chicken, mapo tofu and pork dumplings.

Da Ping Huo perfectly integrates art and delicacies. Serving the Chinese food in western approach makes the guests all over the world feel very much comfortable with the artistic ambience and enjoy the experience on the palate. This is the reason why photos and features appear in numerous world renowned media including “Time”, “Fortune Magazine”, “Far Eastern Economic Review”, BBC, “National Geographic” from time to time.

In Sichuan dialect, “dapinghuo” is about sharing. It means getting together and enjoying food around a table. Every bite is full of flavours, happiness, above all, love.
